Professor Uzi Even is one of the leaders of the Israeli gay community. A member of Meretz Party, he was the first Israeli Parliament member who was openly Gay.

He and his partner, Dr. Amit Kamah, took in a child who was thrown out by his family due to the child's homosexual orientation.

Prof. Even was on the cutting edge of changing laws that repressed gay behavior and conduct in Israel, for example, in the army, place of employment, etc.

פרופ' עוזי אבן -קורות חיים


פרופ' עוזי אבן (יליד חיפה, 1940) הוא אחד מבכירי הכימאים בעולם, ומכהן כפרופסור-מן-המניין באוניברסיטת תל אביב.
היה חבר הכנסת ההומו המוצהר הראשון והיחיד עד כה. חי עם בן זוגו, ד"ר עמית קמה, מאז 1986. ביחד הם הוריו של יוסי אבן-קמה. מאז שהעיד בפני הועדה למניעת אפליה בשל נטייה מינית בכנסת במפגשה הראשון ב-2 בפברואר, 1993 על העוולות המוסדיות הנגרמות להומואים ולסביות,
הנהיג ויזם מאבקים רבים בתחום החקיקה והפסיקה. זו היתה החשיפה הציבורית הראשונה בישראל של אדם בעל מעמד בכיר שהוא הומו מוצהר.
בין הצלחותיו המוכחות יש למנות את שינוי פקודות מטכ"ל בעניין גיוס, שיבוץ וקידום של הומואים ולסביות בצה"ל, שהשתוו לאלו של חיילים אחרים.
כמו-כן, לזכותו יש לרשום עזרה בניסוח התיקון של החוק לאיסור לשון-הרע, הגשת תביעות ייצוגיות,
ובעיקר יצירת תקדים ביחסי העבודה לאחר הכרת האוניברסיטה בבן-זוגו לכל עניין ודבר: בשנת 1995 הכירה האוניברסיטה בבן-זוגו כידוע בציבור,
ומאז נהנים סטודנטים ואנשי סגל ברחבי הארץ מן התקדים. בשנת 1996 הוכר עם בן-זוגו על ידי משרד הרווחה כמשפחה אומנה.
היה בין מייסדי פורום "גיאות", ובתור חבר הנהלה קידם את הנושא בתוך מפלגת מרצ. שימש כדובר וכנציג הקהילה בפורומים ובהזדמנויות רבות, למשל: ייעוץ למועצת הרבנים המתקדמים בעניין הכרה בזוגות מאותו המין, וכן תיווך בפרשת הנשיא ויצמן.
